Why do we hear the sirens?
The authorities activate the sirens to warn the public about acute disasters and accidents that are particularly serious. The sirens are activated to warn people in the affected area.
In Denmark, the authorities can issue warnings in several ways, depending on how serious the danger is. For example, there are sirens from rooftops, and S!RENEN, the mobile-based public warning system. Both are activated when the threat of danger is most serious.
The police is responsible for assessing when the sirens and S!RENEN must be activated. They also activate the sirens and S!RENEN.

What should you do when you hear the sirens?
When you hear the sirens, you should
- GO inside and
- SEEK information on national broadcasters DR or TV 2.
Here you will receive the same information as provided via S!RENEN, and you should follow the instructions immediately:
- STOP what you’re doing.
- READ the message that you get from S!RENEN on your mobile phone.
- REACT by following the instructions from S!RENEN.
S!RENEN will notify you directly on your mobile phone about how to act and where to get more information. You can also get information from DR and TV2.
If, for various reasons, you cannot receive the warning via S!RENEN if the sirens are activated, you must go indoors and get information from DR and TV2.

Why do I need to get alerts on my mobile?
S!RENEN is being implemented on the basis of a directive adopted in 2018 by the European Parliament and the Council. The directive requires member states to implement a mobile-based public warning system. As an EU member state, Denmark is obliged to implement a mobile-based public warning system.
S!RENEN will help ensure that alerts are as accessible as possible to the general public. Mobile-based alerts will enable people in an area affected by an emergency to get direct notifications and instructions for further action. This increases the safety of those exposed to immediate danger.
